A phrasal verb is defined as a phrase that consists of a verb with a preposition or adverb or both, the meaning of which is different from the meaning of its separate parts (Cambridge dictionary).

Today’s phrasal verb is: back up.

This phrasal verb simultaneously means “to give support” and “to make a copy of”. It can also be used to describe ‘reverse movement’.

Example:

The accused man insisted that his wife would back up his story and give him an alibi.

I always back up important files on my computer.

It’s difficult to back up a truck when a trailer is attached.

In Spanish different words are used to express these actions. “Respaldar” or “apoyar” are used in reference to giving support, “hacer un respaldo” means to make a copy and “dar marcha atrás” is used to express reverse movement.
