Phrase of the day! Put something out
Phrase of the day! We are going to continue teaching different phrases.
This week we will focus on phrasal verbs.
Today’s phrasal verb is: to put something out. We can use this phrasal verb informally instead of the more formal verb “extinguish”, meaning “to stop something from burning”, for example a fire or a cigarette.
Example: The firefighters came and quickly put out the fire.
So we use this particularly for something that burns with flames.
We DON’T use it for something electrical like an electric fire or light.
In these cases we use “turn off” or “switch off”.
Example: I was getting tired so I switched off the fire and the lights and went to bed.
This is confusing for Spanish speakers because in all these cases it would translate as “apagar”.

¡Frase del día! Vamos a seguir enseñando diferentes frases.
Esta semana nos centraremos en los «phrasal verbs».
El verbo de hoy es: «to put something out». Podemos usar esta frase informalmente en lugar del verbo más formal «extinguish», que significa «detener algo de la quema», por ejemplo un fuego o un cigarrillo.
Ejemplo: The firefighters came and quickly put out the fire.
Así que usamos esto particularmente para algo que se quema con llamas.
NO lo usamos para algo eléctrico, como un fuego o luz eléctrica.
En estos casos utilizamos «turn off» o «switch off».
Ejemplo: I was getting tired so I switched off the fire and the lights and went to bed.
Esto es confuso para los hispanohablantes porque en todos estos casos se traduciría como «apagar».
